Bodine Ester Abramov

Bodine Ester Abramov

Bodine Ester Abramov’s background and artistic philosophy provide a rich context for understanding her work. Born and raised in Amsterdam, a vibrant hub for the 90s art scene in the Netherlands, she was immersed in the world of art from an early age due to her father’s influence as a sculptor.
Her love and passion for visual arts, particularly drawing and painting, emerged early on. Bodine finds the magic of creativity in the transformative process of turning “nothing” into “something.” She considers it a luxury when people possess the natural compulsion to create, viewing it as a unique and powerful force that gives life genuine meaning.

About the paintings

The recurring theme in Bodine’s paintings revolves around her exploration of the authenticity of the human being, encompassing both the physical form and the emotional connections we all share. Her work delves into questions of the realness of these connections, the multitude of versions of ourselves, and how external influences shape our identities. Each element, from ears to feet and profiles, is treated as completely unique, reflecting her enduring fascination with the individuality of these features.

Emotion, according to Bodine, is the key to our ability to connect, and she sees each person she encounters as a version of herself, fostering a mutual recognition. Her art explores themes of family, friendships, and self-presentation in relation to others. Through self-studies from life and portraits of friends and acquaintances, she seeks to find a piece of herself in each subject, blurring the boundaries between self and other.

One of Bodine’s pondering is captured in her question: “If I paint my feet in the mirror, do I see my own feet, or only the feet that exist in the dimension of the mirror, and do those feet then belong to me in that dimension? Or do they stop existing when the mirror ends at the top?” This curiosity reflects her philosophical approach to art, probing the nature of perception and reality. The collection presented here is a glimpse into her artistic exploration, showcasing self-studies and portraits that capture the essence of her musings on identity, connection, and the intricate interplay between self and others.

The simplicity and stripped-down approach in her portraiture invite viewers to seek deeper meanings within themselves, fostering a reflective and introspective experience with her art.

The Stone Twins - FEAR

The Stone Twins - FEAR

No Unvaxxed

From the series: FEAR

By The Stone Twins

This sign is our commentary on the two-tier society that existed in the Netherlands from Sept. 25th 2021 until Feb. 25th 2022. During this period, the ‘Coronatoegangsbewijs’ (CTB) made a distinction between those who were vaccinated and those who were unvaccinated.

Presented under the guise of a public health initiative, we saw the introduction of the ‘corona passport’ as a coercive, disproportionate and discriminatory measure.

FEAR (or Product FEAR) is a self-initiated project by The Stone Twins questioning the fearmongering around COVID-19, and the proportionately of the measures/restrictions. Each FEAR social media post is accompanied by critical writing and robust research. Now almost two years since the end of lockdown, it’s more important than ever to evaluate and question.

Louis Swagerman

Louis Swagerman

The search for the essence of atmosphere and light has been the common thread throughout Louis Swagerman’s work from the very beginning. A thorough study of old painting techniques initially resulted in realistic works, executed to utmost perfection, primarily focusing on landscapes and portraits. Gradually, his work evolved towards freer forms and techniques, along with a new, more intense use of color. Since 1999, there has been a shift towards a certain level of abstraction. This focus revolves around the suggestion of boundless space, silent charge, natural order, and monumental tranquility. It’s a quest for the power of limitation.

Water, especially the sea, serves as significant sources of inspiration. The sea acts as a clear mirror, water being the unifying element of everything. In addition to his independent work, Louis Swagerman also creates portraits. For instance, there is a portrait painted by him of the actress Henny Orri hanging in the Amsterdam City Theatre.”

Martijn Kwant

Martijn Kwant

Martijn Kwant (Utrecht, 1991) is a contemporary artist who paints landscapes using traditional materials and historical oil painting techniques. The first time he touched an oil paint brush was in August 2020, from that moment he knew this is what he wanted to do. Central in his work is a love for nature, where he finds inspiration in the colours that sunsets bring and the reflections of light on water.

Not being familiar with art, it was only a year after he started painting when he discovered a 19th -century art movement which shared the exact same interest in the depiction of colour and light – Impressionism. He immediately felt a deep connection with artists such as Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro and Claude Monet who lived almost 150 years ago, but shared the same fascination with spontaneity, sunlight and colour.

He prefers to work “en plein air” to capture the likeness of a specific moment in time and the feeling of being present in nature. With his works, he tries to capture the beauty of nature and share this experience with the rest of the world.

Sarah Wesselink

Sarah Wesselink

Welcome to the art journey of Sarah Wesselink, an up-and-coming artist from Amsterdam. Self-taught and brimming with creative energy, Sarah is just beginning to make her mark in the world of art. She blends a variety of mediums, including acrylic (spray) paint, chalk, and epoxy resin, to bring her visions mostly based on music to come to life. As she connects with an expanding audience through social media, Sarah invites us to join her on this exciting path.’’

Sounds and Senses

From a young age, Sarah discovered she had synaesthesia, a condition where senses intertwine. This sensory experience deeply influences her work, making her art an interpretation of colours, sounds, and music. Music has always been a big part of her life.

“I get my inspiration from different sources. For me, there doesn’t need to be a message behind my art. I want to make beautiful things that evoke emotion. This is what is happening inside my head.

I invite you to come watch it.”
